Christian Symbolisms/Context In Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables

We have all seen the film version of Victor Hugo’s novel ‘Les Miserables ‘ in the year 2012. We may have not noticed it, but there are Christian symbolisms or Biblical truths found in this film. Les Miserables is a film filled with imagery, symbolism and timeless Biblical truths. It is a story of forgiveness, redemption and love.

Here are some important themes from the film Les Miserables:

A) The Power Of Forgiveness

We have been introduced to the character of Jean Valjean, a former thief or convict who sees his future as a bleak one. What we can see here that may strike us is Valjean’s encounter with the Bishop of Digne who shows great kindness to the main character, even though Valjean knows he is undeserving to be treated with kindness by the priest. Despite being shown kindness, Valjean continues to steal from the Bishop of Digne, flees from the parish but was caught red-handed. The priest may have just let him be put to jail, but rather than have Valjean imprisoned, the Bishop of Digne assures the police that Valjean didn’t commit any theft but gave the candlesticks to him as a gift.

Just like Valjean, we are undeserving of God’s forgiveness, but because of His great love for us, He gave up His Only Son to die on the cross for our sins.

Scripture Verse : Romans 3:23,24

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.”

B) Bound By The Law

Through this theme, Inspector Javert is the perfect example as he made it his personal mission to ensure that Jean Valjean be put behind bars for his entire life. Inspector Javert doesn’t believe that people can change for the better and that they stay the way they are. Bound by his need to follow the law, he doesn’t see any other way to set Jean Valjean free than to commit suicide, in which he commits another sin.

We were set free by the law by God’s grace.

Scripture Verse: Matthew 5:38, 39

“Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.”

C) Love Conquers All

God redeemed His people by His great love towards them. God loves us as an earthly father would do. We were adopted and given the right to be called His children.

Jean Valjean displays Christ’s relationship with us wherein comfort, selfless love and hope are being demonstrated as Valjean adopts Cosette and takes her away from the hands of the ethically challenged Thenardier couple, keeping his promise to Fantine.

We may not have noticed it in the film, but Valjean also risked being shot by Inspector Javert so that he could save the life of Marius.

Scripture Verse: John 3:16

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Not only do we see Christian symbolisms in the film itself, but also through its characters. We may see them through Jean Valjean , The Bishop, Inspector Javert, Fantine, Enjolras, Marius, Eponine, Gavroche and Cosette.

Jean Valjean

We may see Valjean’s yearning for freedom after serving his 19 year sentence in a French prison for stealing a loaf of bread just to save his sister’s dying son and for trying to escape. Valjean suffered from injustice where he was incarcerated for petty crimes and was treated poorly by not being given a shelter and employment due that he was carrying a yellow ticket which condemns him.

How We Can Reflect/Relate Through Jean Valjean:

Every one of us has this yearning to be free from what bounds us. Freedom is given to us not to sin again but to have a new life. We are being saved by grace through faith and not of our own works.

The Bishop (portrayed by Colm Wilkinson)
The Bishop (portrayed by Colm Wilkinson)

The Bishop

The Bishop is a perfect example of God’s loving kindness and mercy towards us. He freely forgave Valjean  and brought him back to God that Valjean may start a new life, rather than condemning him for the crime he committed.

How We Can Reflect/Relate:

There are times that someone in our lives, whether our loved ones or another person, may have wronged us. We are tempted to condemn that person rather than forgiving him/her for hurting us.  But this is not what God wants us to do.

There are verses that we can refer to with this:

Matthew 6:14

“For if you forgive men their trespasses, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you.”

Ephesians 4:32

“Be kind and tender-hearted to one another, forgiving each other just as in Christ God forgave you.”

Inspector Javert (portrayed by Russell Crowe)
Inspector Javert (portrayed by Russell Crowe)

Inspector Javert (portrayed by Russell Crowe)

A rigid and dogmatic believer who sticks to the law is what perfectly describes Inspector Javert as he sees that men like Valjean can never change and that for him, Valjean will always be a thief in his eyes. The problem with Valjean is that he is obsessed with his own ideal of justice which makes him become  a villain serving as a judge or jury to everyone he meets.

How We Can Reflect or Relate:

Just like Javert, we tend to stick to our own rules and idea of justice which ties us down and make it impossible for us to truly forgive someone for the wrongs they have done. We cannot be transformed by love or forgiveness and show compassion if we keep holding on to our ideal of justice.

Fantine (portrayed by Anne Hathaway)
Fantine (portrayed by Anne Hathaway)

Fantine (portrayed by Anne Hathaway)

Fantine is one of the examples of those who suffered injustice in that she was sacked from her job for the fact that she had an illegitimate child, resulting to her poverty and causing her to turn to prostitution. Valjean recognizes her from the factory as he helps rescue her from the being arrested by Inspector Javert.

How We Can Reflect/Relate:

Fantine’s character reminds us that we are not immune from suffering and trials, but God’s promise reminds us that we are never alone.

Enjolras (portrayed by Aaron Tveit)
Enjolras (portrayed by Aaron Tveit)

Enjolras (portrayed by Aaron Tveit)

A charming young man who is capable of being terrible best describes Enjolras. He is the leader of the Friends of the ABC /Parisian student revolutionaries in 1832. Enjolras sees General Lamarque’s death as an opportunity to assert the ideals of equality and help for the poor and believes that he and his comrades can rally the people with demonstrations of freedom in the streets.

However , with the arrival of Enjolras and his friends who want political change, the themes or redemption are being intertwined.

How We Can Reflect/Relate:

There is nothing wrong with siding with the poor and oppressed and yes, we all want freedom from slavery of the corrupt practices of the government, but there is no need for violence. Just like Enjolras, we wanted to see our fellow men treated with equality and respect, but not to the extent of harming other people and shedding blood.

We all want political reform but it doesn’t have to mean violence.

Marius (portrayed by Eddie Redmayne)
Marius (portrayed by Eddie Redmayne)

Marius (portrayed by Eddie Redmayne)

A handsome Parisian student who is immediately smitten with love as he sees Cosette for the first time. He is also a part of the student rebellion who then was wounded at the barricade. Valjean served as Marius savor who brought him back to his grandfather.

How We Can Reflect/Relate:

Just like Marius, we all had our share of experiences and memories of our first love. Aside from that, he also stands for the youthful idealism which propels us that we can change the world.

Eponine (portrayed by Samantha Barks)
Eponine (portrayed by Samantha Barks)

Eponine (portrayed by Samantha Barks)

Eponine, despite being raised to an ethically challenged Thenardier couple, makes it sure that she puts Marius happiness first before her, as she is deeply in love with him.

Eponine plays a major spiritual role in terms of bringing Marius and Cosette together eventually. What we can see through her is the nobility of self sacrifice for other people’s happiness and well being. The only problem though is that she burns herself out by giving up her own pleasure and all that she’s got to others and not taking care of herself.

How We Can Reflect/Relate:

We’ve all had our fair share and experiences of unrequited love. And that’s really painful.

Though it’s good that we stay loyal and dedicated care-giver to those we love, we must still remember that we have the responsibility to take care of ourselves and that we deserve to be loved. We are responsible for our happiness.

Gavroche (portrayed by Daniel Huttlestone)

Gavroche (Daniel Huttlestone)

Who would forget the cute street urchin who finds a home and meaning of life with the revolutionaries? Gavroche is an epitome of one who courageously lays down his life for the sake of his friends.

How We Can Reflect/Relate

We all have that one Gavroche in our life who keeps the faith that despite being outnumbered in a fight, we are still able to become triumphant over everything. We have that one person who uplifts our spirits by becoming a cheerful individual.

Scripture Verse: John 15:13

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

Cosette (portrayed by Amanda Seyfried)
Cosette (portrayed by Amanda Seyfried)

Cosette (portrayed by Amanda Seyfried)

Cosette was raised by Valjean as his daughter, as a promise kept to Fantine. She was protected and loved by both Valjean and Marius.

How We Can Reflect/Relate:

Grace, like to us Christians, is a mystery to Cosette who responds in the only way she can which is total love. We are to respond the same to God’s love.

Summing this up, Les Miserables displays Biblical truths about love, redemption and forgiveness . It’s not just about sentiments, we learn and reflect from each character.

Fun-Filled BDJ Women’s Summit

Yesterday’s event was a wonderful experience for me as a Bella, especially since this was also my first time to attend a conference or summit for women empowerment. The Samsung Hall Auditorium was filled with more than a hundred guests.

Inside the Samsung Hall Auditorium
Inside the Samsung Hall Auditorium

Registration for the BDJ Women’s Summit started at 8 am and the queue was already that long when I arrived at the venue. Lucky enough, I and my sisters were able to get to the venue in time, much thanks to Grab.  We were waiting patiently for our turn to be accommodated and claim our ID Pass, as well as our Summit Kit which includes snacks and goodies sponsored by brand partners (Oishi, Hunt’s, Goldilocks, Kratos, Griffins, La Pacita, Kai, bobbie Nails, habitat, Sharpie, Olay, Jergens, BIC, Ace Water Spa and more) , as well as the booklet where we could jot down key notes.

While waiting for the program to start, I reviewed the booklet from cover to cover starting with the flow of the program, speaker profiles, partner organizations and event promos. I also took a selfie with my ID pass.

Ms. Luane Dy hosting the BDJ Women's Summit

Ms. Aya, one of the BDJ Team, opened the Women’s Summit by welcoming the Bellas and started a program with mini-games such as question and answer game, Bring Me, and sharing game, before opening the floor to the host, Ms. Luane Dy, followed by the welcoming remarks of Ms. Darlyn Ty.

Now, proceeding with the plenary sessions and  speakers, here’s how it went:

Plenary 1 Speakers: Ms. Abbygale Arenas –De Leon , Ms. Jodi Sta. Maria and Ms. Hidilyn Diaz (Unleashing the Power Within)

Ms. Abbygale Arenas-De Leon (Certified Image Consultant, Binibining Filipinas 1997)
Ms. Abbygale Arenas-De Leon (Certified Image Consultant, Binibining Filipinas 1997)

Some of us may not be that familiar with Ms. Abbygale Arenas. She was a former representative of the Philippines in the 1997 Miss Universe Pageant, Fashion Model and a TV Personality. She has ventured into the world of image consultancy where she inspires others with her legacy of beauty and poise.

Ms. Abbygale Arenas inspired Bella’s on looking and feeling good through her sharing of secrets on how every Bella can be beautiful, especially when it comes to dressing and different kinds of smile. Apart from that, she also teaches us the importance of living life NOW.

Here are some of her words of wisdom:
* “Live the best life possible.”
* “We can make things special. “/ “You are unique”
* “You have to make sure that you treat your body like a temple.”

What I liked the most from these words of wisdom is the third one. Our body is God-given, we don’t really own it so we better take good care of it by not defiling our bodies with vices like smoking, drinking or putting tattoos.

Ms. Jodi Sta. Maria (Actress, International Emmy Awards Nominee)
Ms. Jodi Sta. Maria (Actress, International Emmy Awards Nominee)

We have all seen her in various television shows like Tabing Ilog (George Fuentebella), Pangako Sa ‘Yo 2002 version (Lia Buenavista), Be Careful With My Heart (Maya Dela Rosa) and the remake version of Pangako Sa ‘Yo (Amor Powers). Ms. Jodi Sta. Maria started acting at the age of 15. She’s a versatile actress who received nominations from FAMAS, Gawad Urian and the International  Emmy Awards for her portrayal of Amor Powers.

Here’s my takeaway from her life-story sharing/words of wisdom:
* “When God gives skills or talents, it comes with a purpose.”
* “Turning our dreams to reality requires massive action.”
* Dreams give vision, actions give the opportunity, but it is faith that gives us the fulfillment.”

What struck me the most from her inspirational words was the last one where we should not only dream, take action, but also have deep faith in our Creator who gave us the skills/talents. This was what I admire the most in Ms. Jodi Sta Maria — her deep faith in God. More than that, she inspired me more with her answer to my question ‘What can you advice to those who wanted to be actresses someday?’ . It’s true that it wasn’t really easy when entering the show business, it takes a lot of patience, determination and passion/desire.. but what matters most is our ATTITUDE.

Ms. Hidilyn Diaz (Silver Olympic Medalist, Rio 2016 Olympics)
Ms. Hidilyn Diaz (Silver Olympic Medalist, Rio 2016 Olympics)

Ever heard of the quote or saying ‘No Pain, No Gain’? That’s what I believe most when Ms. Hidilyn Diaz shared her life story yesterday. Despite having leg injuries and failed in one of the competitions she has joined, she still chose to be positive ,fight and gave her very best until she finally won. Determination and passion were the qualities or characteristics she possessed .

Here’s what I liked most from the things she shared:
* “Nothing’s impossible with God.”
* God gives us more than what we expect only when we know how to surrender everything to Him but still remember to do our part.”

Both these statements hold true. Nothing is really impossible with God when we entrust everything to Him. But still, we have to keep in mind that we also have to do our part.

After their session follows a Q&A with the speakers where Bella’s get to ask questions for each speaker.

Q&A with Ms. Abbygale, Hidilyn and Jodi
Q&A with Ms. Abbygale, Hidilyn and Jodi

Plenary 2 Speakers: Ms. Rebecca Bustamante-Mills and Ms. Pia Gladys Perey (Make It Big With Something Small)

Ms. Rebecca Bustamante Mills (OFW turned Businesswoman, Charle Associates)
Ms. Rebecca Bustamante Mills (OFW turned Businesswoman, Charle Associates)

Ms. Rebecca Bustamante-Mills opens her session with two questions: “How can you be successful? or what is success?” and “Why are there many who are un-successful?”

You can be successful only if you work hard. It doesn’t matter where you start, just as long as you work hard and strive for excellence? Then you can become successful. With regards to the second question, there are many reasons why many people are unsuccessful: 1) unwilling to work, 2) negative thinking , 3) fear of failure .  Let me add poor time management to the many reasons why so many people are unsuccessful.

Ms. Rebecca Bustamante –Mills shares her piece of mind when it comes to her success alongside her life story. These words of wisdom are:
* “It doesn’t matter where you start.”
* “There is no shame in helping others.”
* “Challenges make you strong.”
* “Learn the skills and apply them.”
* “You need to achieve what you want in life.”

I love the first and third statement. It doesn’t matter where we start and it also doesn’t matter how big or small our business is, as long as we have the determination to work hard, then we can be successful. Also, failures or challenges should not to stop us from achieving what we want in life. As a matter of fact, they serve as a teacher to us and make us strong.

Unfortunately, I missed out on Ms. Pia Glady’s Perey’s session and the Q&A

Plenary 3 Speakers: Danah & Stacy Gutierrez and Jayme Pizarro (Be The Driving Force To Positive Change)

Ms. Danah & Stacy Gutierrez (Editors-in-Chief,
Ms. Danah & Stacy Gutierrez (Editors-in-Chief,

These twins started the Body Positivity Movement in Philippines. Being advocates of body positivity, Danah and Stacy appeared on various media in order to promote their advocacy and message when it comes to loving your body.  They upgraded their personal blog into a web magazine called and launched their first book entitled “The Big Fat Book of Self Love” , which inspires everyone to love and accept their body.

Their words of wisdom? Here they are:
* “You can have flaws and be flaw some.”
* “Big girls are the ones who should feel safe.” In other words, NO body shaming!
* “There is health at every size.”
* “Ask yourself, “What kind of reality are you creating for yourself?” /”What lies are you believing for yourself?”
* “How can you share positivity when you don’t have it in yourself?”

What strikes the most is the fourth and fifth statement. Sometimes, we really have to ask ourselves these two questions: “What kind of reality are we creating for ourselves?” and “What lies are we even believing for ourselves?”

Moreover, we reflect on this question: “How can you share positivity when you don’t have it in yourself?” . If we , ourselves, don’t have this positivity within us, how can we expect others to do the same?

Ms. Jayme Pizzaro (Founder,
Ms. Jayme Pizzaro (Founder,

Just like our silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz, Jayme Pizarro also experienced having injury, but this doesn’t stop her from running a marathon. She’s a head strong woman behind the popular running blog called ‘’ which started first as a journal of her passion for running then later grew into one of the most credible and widely followed online resource and inspiration for Filipino runners.

What I’ve learned most from her is the 6Fs which stands for: 1) Follow your heart, girl!, 2) Find a higher purpose, 3) Friends! Community, 4) Face Your Fears, 5) Fight and 6) Have Fun.  Aside from this, I’ve also learned not to be afraid to give up the good to go for the great . This means that we can do more than that so we don’t need any reason to be afraid to step out of our comfort zones. Get out and have fun!

Vice President Ma. Leonora ‘Leni’ Robredo (Keynote Speaker)

Last, but definitely not the least, is our key note speaker: Vice President Ma. Leonora “Leni” Robredo. She’s known to be the 14th Vice President of the Philippines but before that, she was a human rights lawyer who devoted most of her time serving for the most vulnerable sectors of the Philippine Society. She was also a public attorney, a member of the alternative lawyers group SALIGAN and Representative of the Third District of Camarines Sur.

I admit I am not really that much of a fan of our Vice President, but it doesn’t give me any reason not to be empowered by her words yesterday. Quoting her, “Empathy empowers while meanness and criticisms imprisons.” When we are being mean to one another or even criticize other people, we imprison them or do not give them the freedom to voice out their thoughts. When we empathize with other people, we empower them.

What’s the use of being on the safe side anyways when you can’t speak out for the voiceless? Despite all the issues being thrown to her, most especially the impeachment being imposed, Vice President Leni Robredo still chooses to speak out, unafraid. She’s not afraid to lose a fight.

Group photo with Vice President Leni Robredo

Ms. Abbygale, Ms. Jodi, Ms. Hidilyn, Ms. Danah &Stacy Gutierrez, Ms. Jaymie Pizarro and our Vice President are these speakers who empowered and inspired me the most.

But of course, the fun in this event just doesn’t stop with the sessions, there’s the raffle prize where lucky Bella’s get the chance to win one of the surprises from BDJ’s brand partners – gift certificates from Skin Station, Serenitea and Browhaus, gift packs from Jergens, Wacoal, Tupperware, Pink Sugar, Flawless and more. I could consider myself lucky also for winning three gift certificates from Skin Station (1 from the game and 2 from the raffle.)

With Ms. Luane Dy

Ms. Luane Dy gave the closing remarks and ended the Women’s Summit. It was now time for us to claim our certificates from the staff in charge. I still stayed for a short moment after the sessions to visit one of the booths of some of the advocacy groups like Miss Possibilities, Angat Buhay and ECPAT PH, as well as join in some games from Flawless and Serenitea. There’s also this photobooth where Bella’s can take photos of themselves.

And when they had gone a little further thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were also in the ship mending their nets. Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff In Love (Simple Ways To Nurture and Strengthen Your Relationships While Avoiding The Habits That Break Down Your Loving Connection) by Richard Carlson Ph.D. and Kristine Carlson- Book Review

Basically, this book is a guide on how people could nurture and strengthen their relationships with either their spouse and at the same time avoid the habits that could possibly break the relationship off. Dr. Richard and Kristine Carlson share a hundred strategies on how we could do so.

Strategy #1: Mostly, be pals.

Love relationships usually start from being good friends and getting-to-know each other phase. There’s nothing wrong with starting off from being good pals as this is where you get to know more of your partner (e.g. his/her likes and dislikes, imperfections, etc.). Just as how you treat your friend, should also be the way how you treat your partner in life.

Strategy #2: Learn to laugh at yourself

We all know that nobody is perfect. It’s part of being human. Don’t take yourself too seriously but instead learn to laugh at yourself whenever you happen to make some mistakes in your life.

Strategy #3: Let it go already

Don’t keep on dwelling on whatever mistakes or shortcomings your partner may have had. It’s no fun being around someone who harbors bitter feelings towards their partner, thinking that they would possibly do the same thing again. As what Elsa from Disney’s “Frozen” says, let it go.

Strategy #4: Turn Up The Heat

Don’t wait for your partner to make the change before you do. Because honestly, he or she won’t. Making conditions or excuses such as “I can’t turn up the heat until certain conditions are met, until he or she begins to change.” or even “I’m sick of his laziness. All he does is sit around. He’s not even trying.” is never going to work, much less that your partner will get his or her act together. No matter how long you wait, there’s a fat chance that the change you wanted to see in your partner will come.

Strategy #5: Consider that the grass probably isn’t greener

We all have this habit of trading old things for newer ones, but we never get satisfied because we always look or wish for something better. Newer cars, newer things, better jobs or careers, and so on. We can’t always get what we want all the time. Same goes for our relationship with our future partner (for those who are single).

Strategy #6: Throw away your scorecard

Admit it, some of us also have this habit of keeping track on what we do compared to that of what our partner fails to do, vice versa. This could lead to frustrations in life if this habit of ours never goes away. Instead of being resentful and keeping a tally of our partner’s mistakes, why not let him or her know where he or she has gone wrong in a calm manner?

Strategy #7: Be Kind First

Familiar with the Golden Rule “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”? This applies to how we treat our partners or future spouse. We can’t expect our partner to treat us kindly when we ourselves don’t treat them the same way or manner we wanted them to treat us.

Strategy #8 : Don’t use your partner as a punching bag!

Don’t vent all your frustrations on your partner as if he or she is always the one responsible for all your frustrations in life. They don’t even have any idea what’s going on with your day. As much as it feels good to share your frustrations with someone you love and care for, venting all of it on them does not even seem to be fair. Don’t make your partner feel like a punching bag by doing this.

Strategy #9: Ask the question: Whose quirk is this anyway?

We usually get frustrated whenever our things disappear or even get used by other people, leaving us with nothing to use whenever we do things. Or much more, leave a mess in some areas of our house, most especially the kitchen. Before we get mad at our partner for doing so, why don’t we pause for a minute and ask ourselves this question: “Whose quirk is this anyway?”

Rather than yell out at our partner, why don’t we just do the thing ourselves in a calm manner?

Strategy #10: Talk To Him His Way

Just like in the 5th and 7th strategy, we don’t always get to be the one to be listened to. Same goes for our partner. It’s a give and take situation here. We listen to our partner just as we want our partner to listen to us in whatever we want to tell them. It’s all about effective communication.

Strategy #11: Avoid the words, “I Love You, But”

Never must we add conditions whenever we say these three words to our future partner. We don’t make it a habit to connect our loving phrase to our special someone with something that’s bothering us. Don’t make it sound like a lecture to them.

There are other different strategies that the author of this book want to impart on us. These are ways we could further strengthen and nurture relationships with our future partner and spouse. Other strategies include filling our lives with opportunities to express love, looking for gifts, sharing an insight, staying away from ultimatums (no one wants them anyway), allowing time for transitions, keeping your cool before the quarrel, knowing your own value (you don’t have to end up being a doormat) , setting a good example, being a world-class listener, letting your partner buy his or her own lunch, surprising your partner with compliments, stop wishing your partner were different, thinking before you speak … and most importantly, staying away from comparisons.
