Song Analysis of “I Dreamed A Dream” from Les Miserables

Basically, this song from the musical “Les Miserables” speaks of Fantine’s  pain , anger, and sadness on having been left by Tholomyes, with nothing but a child to look after..  Despite her ugly past, she still hoped that this man would come back and that they would spend their lives together.

Analysis  of this song will be by line or stanza.

There was a time when men were kind
And their voices were soft
And their words inviting
There was a time when love was blind
And the world was a song
And the song was exciting
There was a time….
Then it all went .. wrong

Gone were the days that all men would practice chivalry and be gentle to ladies, with their sweet caressing words and perform acts of kindness. Rarely would you hear them nowadays speaking to women softly. This was how Fantine felt right after her lover , Felix Tholomyes , left her with nothing but a child to feed and care for.  Everything went wrong for her – getting fired from a job (because of her jealous co-workers’ misconception of her) , forced to go through prostitution just to earn money and feed her child, and almost getting into jail for allegedly hitting a man who harassed her.

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high and life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving

Fantine dreamed of living a life that was worth living, where everything will be just alright, hoping that Tholomyes’ love for her would be the same as it was. She dreamed that God would be merciful enough to forgive her for her wrong deeds. Just like Fantine, we all dream of this kind of life, where everything will go smoothly , but sadly we had to go through tough times and face the ugly truth of what the real world shows us.

But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
As they turn your dream to shame

The word ‘tiger’ in the stanza  simply refers to our enemies (either human beings or our emotions like fear).  They may come to crush all our hopes and dreams, turning them to frustrations. The line ‘With their voices soft as thunder’ is an ironic expression. No matter how soft their words may be,  you could just feel the harshness behind it, especially with how they utter words.

He slept a summer by my side
He filled my days with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came

Fantine felt all alone when Tholomyes, the father of Cosette, abandoned her.  There are instances when we feel like our loved one would someday leave us, just like how Tholomyes left Fantine. We feel like we’re already unloved and all alone, like no one cares for us anymore. But we’re not. It’s just that they are not good for us or that we deserve guys who are better than them.

And still I dream he’ll come to me
That we would live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather

Fantine still felt hopeful that the love of her life would come back to her and spend the rest of their lives together. But everything turned out the other way. There are dreams that just don’t come true for everyone. There are times that we feel like life is being unfair to us whenever things don’t go our way, but in reality, it is not what God wills for us and that He has better plans for us. The word ‘storms’ here refers to our fate. We cannot control them, no matter how hard we try to do so.

I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I’m living
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed a dream
I dreamed

Almost all of us could relate to Fantine’s fate. She hoped to live a better life than what she had experienced – which was a hellish one for her. She wished that it would be a different one. It’s like the life that she lived destroyed her dream to live a happy one.

Day of Valor

Araw ng Kagitingan or Day of Valor is being commemorated every 9th of April , signifying one of the most important events in Philippine History. Historically, the Day of Valor is also known as Bataan Day or Bataan and Corregidor Day in which the Filipino and US military forces joined forces to fight against the Japanese in order to prevent the Japanese from building their naval base here in Manila and launching attacks to Australia, thus denying these people entry into our land. The Japanese troops, however, wreaked havoc on the Pearl Harbor even after they have surrendered, thus  causing the Philippine conquest to take longer than expected.

This is to celebrate the bravery of those war veterans who gallantly defended Corregidor of Bataan and to educate the younger generations , reminding them of the atrocities that the Japanese had inflicted upon the Filipino soldiers during the Death March, an event where these soldiers were to march 87 miles from Bataan heading to Camp O’ Donnell without any food or water and with their belongings mercilessly taken away from them by the Japanese troops. It all started when more than 76,000 starving and disease ridden soldiers (consisting  of 67,000 Filipinos, 1,000 Chinese Filipinos and 11, 976 Americans) were surrendered by Major General Edward King to the Japanese people against General Douglas McArthur and Jonathan Wainright , at the dawn of April 9, 1942. Throughout the march, thousands have perished due to dehydration, untreated wounds , heat and execution while walking while some who got lucky to travel were forced to endure more than an additional 25 miles of marching and were beaten randomly or even denied food and water. What’s worse, those who fell behind were being executed or left to die, leaving the dead bodies sprawled over the road sides and only a number of 54,000 people reached Camp O’ Donnell.

“To live in freedom’s light is the right of mankind”

May this quote give an impact to every mankind. Everyone deserves the right to enjoy freedom. When one doesn’t fight for freedom, he/she will never get to have and enjoy it. Quoting a line from the song “Do You Hear The People Sing?” , it says , “Then join in the fight that will give you the right to be free!” . What happens when we don’t fight for freedom? What would have happened if these war veterans didn’t defend Bataan?

“They will see the people rise”/”Let others rise to take our place until the earth is free”

The Filipino and US soldiers rose and fought against the Japanese in defense of the Corregidor of Bataan, even if it means death.

performing arts

Performing Arts

Performing Arts are forms of art wherein a certain person or group of people called artists use their voice and even body movements to perform in front of an audience. With these elements, artists convey their artistic expressions as opposed to pure visual arts wherein only paint canvas or other sort of materials in order to create a picture of an object, whether physical or static.

In Performing Arts, there are a variety of discipline but with only one purpose and that is to perform in front of an audience. Examples of performing arts include dance, music, circus skills, puppetry or ventriloquism, mime, magic, speech, opera, theatre, and ballet. Those who work in fields like choreography, stagecraft and song composition/writing support performing arts as well.

Performers, as what you call those people who perform in front of an audience , include dancers, magicians, actors, singers, circus artists, and musicians and they adapt their appearances with stage lighting, stage makeup , costumes and all. A specialized form of fine art, which is performance art, is where an artist performs work live to an audience and it involves some sort of plastic art which they call “props”.

There are at least two main branches of performing arts : Theatre and Dance. Theatre focuses more on acting out particular scenes from a story through the combination of music, dance, gesture, speech, spectacle and sound. Forms of theatre include opera, musicals, mime, classical Indian dance, stand-up comedy, illusion, ballet, mime, kabuki (classical Japanese dance-drama), improvisational theatre, plays, pantomime, and even contemporary forms such as performance art and postmodern theatre.

Whereas dance (derived from Old French dancier), generally refers to a form of human movement which is used either as a way to express or presented in spiritual, performance or social setting. Aside from expression, dance is also being used to describe methods of non-verbal communication or what we call “body language” between a human being or animal, a motion in inanimate objects , and even certain forms of genres. Through this, the audience would learn or see what the artists are trying to convey to them through the use of their body movements, whether contemporary or not.

Dance is not complete without a choreography (an art of creating or making dances) and a choreographer (one who does the choreography or dance movement himself/herself). It is also not just a form of expression to convey one’s feelings but also a powerful impulse and skillfully choreographed art which make an important connection that runs through any consideration of dance itself as a subject.

An example of this is a contemporary dance performance by a certain group of artists that I watched in PETA Theatre Center. The way they danced simply conveyed the message to the audience without any use of words. Their body movements was enough to explain what the dance performance was all about. It was not just any ordinary dance performance, but it was also a play for the audience to watch.

Dance was also historical in which it already existed during the Western (6th century B.C.)and Eastern times. Western performing arts included those of the Renaissance, Modern era, and Post-War Performance. They existed during 6th century B.C. , where performing arts started during the Colonial period in Greece, ushered by tragic poets like Sophocles who wrote plays which involves dance, then came the Hellenistic period who introduced to us the widespread use of comedy.  As the Dark Age began, Western Performing Arts have ended during the 9th and 14th century, in which it was limited to religious historical enactments and morality plays brought by the Church in celebration of holy days and other important occasions.

Eastern performing arts, on the other hand, include those from Middle East , Iran, India & Pakistan, China, Thailand, Cambodia, and Japan. Each from different countries have their own history to tell. In Middle East, passion plays were known to be the earliest recorded theatrical event that happened way back in 2000 B.C. The play was about the god Osiris which was performed annually during festivals throughout the civilization which marks the beginning of the long relationship between theatre and religion. Forms of performing arts from Iran include Naghali (story telling), Ru-Howzi, Siah-Bazi , Parde Khani and Mareke giri. There are just many different forms of performing arts during historical times.

Performing Arts, to sum it up, consists of Singing, Acting and Dancing. It’s a package of three different forms of art. Without its history, Performing Arts won’t be performing arts.

For those who aspire or dream of becoming actors and actresses, you could take up Performing Arts as a course in some workshops. It’s not only just about becoming future actors or actresses, but also about enhancing your personality and boosting your confidence to shape you into a better person you wanted to be.
